How to boost your metabolism during menopause

The menopausal years come hormonal changes and slowing of the metabolism which often contribute to weight gain, especially around the abdomen, hips and thighs and that weight is usually very difficult lose. While hormones and metabolism play a role in weight gain, aging, genetic factors and lifestyle can also influence how much weight you gain.

As you age, you lose muscle mass and retain and gain more fat. Losing muscle mass slows the rate at which your body uses calories (metabolism) making it more challenging to lose fat and maintain a healthy weight. If you continue to eat as you always have and don't increase your physical activity, you're likely to gain weight.

What can you do?

  • Eat metabolism-boosting foods and spices like protein-rich foods, green tea, ginger, chili and cayenne pepper as well as apple cider vinegar.

  • Get your ZZZs. Lack of sleep can both lower your metabolism and reduce your muscle mass.

  • Avoid inflammatory foods such as sugary drinks, artificial sweeteners, refined vegetable oils and other processed foods.

  • Avoid calorie restricted diets. This will cause your body to go into starvation mode. Diets that drastically limit your calorie intake can hurt your metabolism. Eat lots of whole foods.

  • Incorporate exercises that build muscle — like resistance training, weight training or high-intensity interval training.

  • Incorporate essential oils that supports metabolism. When combined with healthy lifestyle habits, certain essential oils can help support a healthy metabolism and assist you in your weight management goals. Essential oils can be diffused, taken internally, or applied topically to minimize cravings and encourage a healthy metabolism.

Here are a few essential oils that supports metabolism:

  • Cinnamon Bark essential oil is a powerful tool in supporting your metabolism when taken internally. Add a drop to water or tea and drink daily. Cinnamon is easy to incorporate into cooking and baking, thanks to its pleasant flavor.

  • Cassia, a close relation to Cinnamon, also provides metabolic support, but has a slightly sweeter aroma.

  • Grapefruit has a sweet, citrus aroma that is uplifting and energizing. Additionally, new research has shown that the smell of Grapefruit may reduce cravings. Try diffusing Grapefruit during times of the day when you need more motivation during a diet. Grapefruit can also be great for toning the skin. Apply to trouble areas for added benefits in helping you look and feel your best.

  • Tangerine can boost energy, metabolism, and mood by inhaling it or taking it internally. Diffuse throughout the day, or place one to two drops of Tangerine essential oil in the palm of your hand, rub your palms together, and cup over the nose and mouth for 30 seconds as you breathe deeply.

  • Slim and Sassy is a propriety blend by Doterra and contains several of the oils above. This blend help you minimize cravings and boost metabolism. It was specifically designed as a natural way to manage hunger cravings, calm the stomach, uplift mood, and support a healthy metabolism.
