Your fresh smelling household cleaners could be damaging your health and your hormones

Most of us love to use household cleaners (e.g., laundry, bathroom, floor, etc.) that leave everything smelling fresh and welcoming. Who doesn't enjoy fresh and clean? I do!

The problem is when you are using conventional products that are loaded with fragrances and other toxic chemicals that can cause harm to your health, your animals, your children and the environment.

Especially for women, toxic chemicals can disrupt the endocrine system.

In fact, some of these toxic chemicals are xenoestrogens or endocrine disruptors that mimic estrogen in your body and can trigger estrogen receptors on cancer cells located in the breast just in the same way that natural estrogen produced in the body can.

What is the endocrine system?

The endocrine system is the information superhighway of your body, which allows the different systems, organs, tissues, and cells to work together in a healthy way. It consists of a variety of specialized glands responsible for synthesizing and secreting hormones directly in the circulatory system. It is also directly involved in growth and development, metabolism, sleep, blood sugar management and it is also responsible for how the body responds to stress, injuries and energy.

You see that the endocrine system is very important and if disrupted can cause a multitude of health problems because of its interconnectedness with the body’s cells, organs and glands.

What can you do?

You need to start reading the labels of your favorite cleaning products. Here are some culprits that you need to look for and stay away from:

  • Bleach

  • Chlorine

  • Ammonia

  • Formaldehyde - It is a colorless gas and is used to prevent the growth of bacteria.

When you combine Chlorine and ammonia they produce fumes that are highly irritating to eyes, nose, throat, and lungs, and people with asthma or lung or heart problems should AVOID this.

When you combine Ammonia and lye they can react to form lung-damaging gases.

Stove and oven cleaners can create toxic chlorine gases that are very damaging to your overall health.

Some healthy DIY alternatives

Air freshener

  • In a glass spray bottle, combine a few drops of your favorite essential oil with water. Shake before use to combine the water and oil as much as possible. Spritz around your home as needed.

  • Use a diffuser, combine a few drops of your favorite essential oil with water and diffuse in the desired areas of your home.

  • This blend is wonderful for creating a welcoming atmosphere in your home:

2 drops lemon essential oil

2 drops rosemary essential oil

Bathroom or kitchen cleaners

Pour Baking soda on the surface to be cleaned, add hydrogen peroxide allowing the fizz and bubbles to die down, then proceed to scrub and clean the surface.

All-Purpose Lemon Cleaner

5–10 drops Lemon oil

1 cup water

1 cup vinegar

Natural Oven Cleaner

½ cup baking soda

1 tablespoon coarse salt

¼ cup liquid dish soap

5 drops Lemon essential oil

Combine ingredients to make a thick paste

Apply a generous layer to the inside of the oven and allow to sit for several hours

Fabric softener

In a glass jar, combine 10-15 drops of your favorite essential oils with water, add the desired amount to your washing machine to keep clothes soft and eliminate static cling. The oils I use for my fabric softener include spearmint, lemon and lavender.
