70% Of Women Say These Symptoms Led to Divorce

Lack of sex drive or low libido, vaginal dryness, and painful sex are common problems in many intimate relationships.

According to the survey by the Family Law Menopause Project and Newson Health Research and Education, eight out of 10 women experiencing marriage difficulties said the perimenopause or menopause symptoms put a strain on their family life. The survey found that  70 percent of the 1,000 women surveyed blamed menopause for their divorce or marital problems.

Hormonal changes such as decreased levels of estrogen and progesterone in women during the menopause transition can affect their sex drive (low libido or lack of interest in sex) and many women also experience vaginal dryness and thinning tissues.

Estrogen is the hormone that helps maintain the vagina’s lubrication, elasticity, and thickness. Estrogen levels can decrease after childbirth, breastfeeding, or during cancer treatment. Low levels of estrogen can lead to thinning of the vaginal lining and vaginal dryness which can cause irritation and burning and can make sex painful and uncomfortable. Therefore a lot of women avoid or don’t initiate sex for fear of a painful experience.

According to the National Institute on Aging, the number of women that are impacted by vaginal dryness increases across the menopause transition, from about 15% in premenopausal women to about three times that in late perimenopause and postmenopause.

Hormonal changes can also result in low libido or lack of interest in sex. Other factors contributing to low libido could be that many menopausal women have been in stable marriages for many years or decades and they are tired and sleep-deprived because they are raising children while holding full-time jobs.

What you can do about these symptoms

Moisturizers and Lubricants

Moisturizers and lubricants can be effective for many women with these conditions. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends the following:

  • Over-the-counter moisturizers and lubricants which moisturizers add moisture around and inside the vagina. There are internal and external moisturizers. Internal moisturizers are inserted into the vagina and help build up vaginal tissue, while external moisturizers are made for the vulva and used externally. Using these lubricants can decrease painful discomfort during intercourse. Water-based lubricants are preferred among experts, although they don’t last as long as silicone-based products. Avoid oil-based lubricants because they can cause irritation.

Reduced Estrogen Hormonal treatments

  • Hormonal treatments such as estrogen creams, tablets, and vaginal rings are also another option that the experts recommend. These are inserted into the vagina. These treatments release less estrogen than typical hormone therapy and have fewer risks.

Diet and Lifestyle

  • A balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle can also help to improve low libido and/or vaginal dryness as well as support other menopausal symptoms.

  • A balanced diet includes eating foods that are colorful and nutrient-dense.

  • A healthy lifestyle includes good quality sleep, daily movement, regular self-care, and adequate stress management

While hormonal changes are causing low libido and /or vaginal dryness during the menopause transition which can negatively affect intimate relationships, there are solutions recommended by experts that women can try to improve their conditions. They are encouraged to discuss these symptoms with their medical practitioners.
